Cross Cultural Issues

Understanding and adjusting to a new culture can be challenging. Whether you are now living in a new culture in an adopted country, or are bridging cultural gaps in your interpersonal relationships, including friendships, romantic, or professional relationships, it can be difficult to navigate unfamiliar cultural boundaries, or to introduce someone new to your culture.

Cross cultural issues

You many be dealing with some or all of the following:

  • Learning a new language
  • Learning new customs
  • Learning the values of a culture different from your own
  • Understanding a new financial system
  • Understanding a new system of government
  • Navigating a new school system
  • Working in a new culture
  • Becoming a new member of a family whose culture is different from your own

When is it time to get help?

If the effects of struggling with other cultures leaves you feeling overwhelmed, and you are experiencing the following symptoms to the point where it is affecting your life, or you simply don’t know how to get through these challenges, it may be time to reach out and get some help.

  • Feelings of loneliness, isolation, or alienation
  • General confusion
  • Hurt feelings
  • Anger or frustration
  • Sadness or depression
  • Social anxiety

Treatment methods for dealing with cross cultural issues

There is no one treatment method for overcoming challenges that cross cultural issues may bring. Depending on what it is your experiencing: anxiety, depression, grief, etc. will determine the appropriate therapeutic treatment. Your therapist will talk with you to find out how cross cultural issues are affecting your mental health and then discuss an effective therapy that will be a good fit for your unique personality and circumstances.
