Problematic Sexual Behaviours in Children and Youth
Problematic and Harmful sexual behaviour (HSB) in children and youth is an issue that requires careful and appropriate intervention. Addressing these behaviours effectively is important for the well-being of all children involved.
What is Harmful Sexual Behaviour?
HSB is defined as sexual behaviour that is developmentally inappropriate, may be harmful to the child’s self or others, and/or abusive towards another child or adult. It is important to differentiate between normal exploratory behaviour and concerning actions that may indicate deeper issues.
What is Normal and What is Not?
- Normal behaviour includes playful curiosity and exploration without harmful intent, such as:
- Peeking under bathroom stalls
- Playing “I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours”
- Touching their own genitals
- Asking questions about body differences, intercourse, and babies
- Concerning behaviour includes persistent and explicit sexual behaviours, such as:
- Preoccupation with touching own and/or other children’s genitals
- Behaving beyond their developmental stage
- Using force or intimidation in sexual behaviours
Factors to Consider When Observing Sexualized Behaviour in Children
When evaluating whether a child’s sexual behaviour is normal or concerning, consider the following factors:
- Age and developmental level
- Gender, education, and awareness
- Cultural and family attitudes towards sexuality
Responding to Uncommon or Concerning Behaviour
When encountering concerning sexual behaviour, it’s important to:
- Ask Questions – Gently inquire about the child’s understanding of their behaviour.
- Stay Calm – Maintain a calm demeanor to encourage openness.
- Don’t Punish – Redirect the child to other activities without punishment.
- Teach Boundaries – Educate children about safe bodily boundaries, consent, and appropriate behaviours.
How to Seek Early Intervention:
Early identification and intervention are key to addressing HSB. Children often communicate their experiences and needs through their behaviour. Prompt and informed responses by adults can significantly impact the child’s development and prevent further issues. We emphasize the importance of these at Insight Psychological where we aim to provide comprehensive support for children displaying harmful sexual behaviours. We offer:
- Counseling – A supportive space to address the impacts of HSB, instilling resilience and coping strategies.
- Educational Programs – Awareness and prevention programs promoting healthy relationships and safe behaviours.
- Family Support – Involving parents and caregivers in the treatment process to create a supportive environment for the child.
Early intervention can prevent the escalation of harmful behaviours and promote healthier development. Contact us to learn more about how we can support your family.
