Behavioural Assessment

Formal assessments can help to identify your strengths and weaknesses and provide a clearer path forward for your mental health care. Insight’s trained therapists provide assessments that assist individuals of all ages to improve their lives. Assessments are helpful in identifying your levels of symptoms objectively.  While assessments can vary from individual to individual, most times they include testing, interviews, observation, and consultation with one of Insight’s trained professionals.  Many of these assessments can be done as part of therapy but some may require a higher level of formality depending on the level of need and purpose of the assessment.

Our behavioural assessments are available for adults, teens, children, and couples and all of our clients will be provided with comprehensive testing, clinical interviews, and in-depth reviews of their diagnosis.

What is a behavioural assessment?

Behavioural assessments were originally developed for the purpose of identifying the reasons why individuals with severe cognitive or communicative disabilities acted or thought the way they did. Now these tests can explore reasons and/or comparisons to what is typical behaviour in different areas of behavioral functioning to help get a better understanding of what the issue or disorder may be, what might be causing the issue, or what specific behaviors are causing the problem.

Why is the assessment used?

These tests, in addition to a thorough initial interview and background history, help gather the necessary information to fully understand and diagnose behaviour disorders which may help individuals to access funding for individuals with disabilities both within the school system and out.

For any of those issues that are out of Insight’s scope, we have developed a good relationship with medical specialists in the area to help support and/or identify those diagnoses that may be necessary for adequate treatment or funding/care.

Although not funded publicly or by government services, psychological services are usually available through extended health care benefits packages well as some government-sponsored agencies, including Children’s Services and Veterans Affairs.

The assessment process

These assessments can include initial interviews, observation of the behaviors in a context, parent or caregiver ratings, and standardized tests. Some of the common tests insight uses is the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2), Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System Second Edition (ABAS-II).
