Mental Health While Planning a Pregnancy or Trying to Conceive

The path to parenthood begins long before conception. This stage can bring excitement, uncertainty, and for many, significant emotional challenges. We stand beside you with unwavering support through every step of your perinatal mental health journey. Our experienced therapists become your trusted allies, providing both emotional guidance and practical tools tailored to your unique situation.

What Mental Health Challenges or Relational Issues May Come Up While Trying to Conceive?

Trying to conceive can create a challenging cycle where emotional stress directly impacts physical health, potentially affecting fertility. The stress from conceiving can cause chronic stress and anxiety, disrupting hormonal balance, affect ovulation, and reduce sperm quality. This emotional toll frequently manifests in physical symptoms like disrupted sleep, changes in appetite, and decreased libido, while the scheduled nature of fertility-focused intimacy can strain the emotional connection between partners.

Couples may experience feelings of inadequacy, frustration, or resentment that compound their stress levels, further affecting the hormonal process needed for conception. Breaking this cycle requires addressing both the emotional and physical aspects of fertility challenges. At Insight, we focus on an approach that focuses on the impact that stress has on reproductive health.

What Should I Expect in Individual Counselling Related to Fertility Issues?

Whether you’re navigating infertility, working through anxiety or depression related to conception, exploring a same-sex family-building journey, or simply feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to begin, individual counselling at Insight Psychological gives you a space to process what you’re carrying. The goal is to transform what feels overwhelming into manageable steps forward.

In individual sessions, you can expect support with:

  • Mental health concerns related to fertility, including anxiety and depression, addressed early to support better outcomes
  • Processing grief, loss, and uncertainty that often accompany conception challenges
  • Building emotional resilience through each cycle of hope and disappointment
  • Strengthening your sense of clarity and confidence as you move forward on your path to parenthood

What Should I Expect in Couples Counselling Related to Fertility Issues?

At Insight, our team focuses on compassionate support, whether you are looking to rebuild intimacy with your partner, overcome specific challenges affecting your physical connection, reignite passion in your relationship, or navigate the complex emotions that accompany fertility struggles.

In couples counselling, you can expect support with:

  • Rebuilding emotional intimacy that fertility stress has strained or silenced
  • Restoring physical connection when conception attempts have made intimacy feel obligatory rather than relational
  • Managing anxiety together so that one partner’s fear doesn’t become a burden the other carries alone
  • Navigating grief and disappointment across repeated cycles of hope and loss
  • Reigniting passion and closeness in your relationship beyond the fertility journey itself
  • Optimizing your physical well-being through stress management techniques and guidance that support your body while you pursue your family goals

Sessions are led by experienced therapists who create a safe, non-judgmental space where both partners can speak honestly, be heard, and work toward the same goal together.

What Mental Health Challenges or Relational Issues May Come Up While Pregnant?

Perinatal mental health refers to the emotional and psychological challenges a person may face during pregnancy or in the year following birth, including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, bipolar mood disorders, and perinatal psychosis. According to Postpartum Support International, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 men may experience significant symptoms of depression or anxiety during this period.

  • Perinatal Anxiety affects approximately 1 in 5 women and can feel intense, overwhelming, or difficult to control.
  • Perinatal Depression is a mood disorder ranging from mild to severe. Most episodes begin within the first three months postpartum, though symptoms can start anytime in the first year. Symptoms may include persistent sadness, guilt, hopelessness, irritability, fatigue, and changes in sleep or appetite.
  • Perinatal OCD involves intrusive thoughts (such as fear of harming or losing the baby) and compulsive behaviours (such as excessive cleaning, constant checking, or avoiding the child) aimed at managing distress.
  • Postnatal PTSD can develop following a traumatic birth experience and may present as flashbacks, nightmares, panic attacks, hypervigilance, or emotional detachment.
  • Bipolar Mood Disorder involves cycles of depression and elevated mood (mania or hypomania). Postpartum symptoms can include racing thoughts, impulsivity, decreased need for sleep, and agitation.
  • Perinatal Psychosis is a rare but serious condition affecting 1 to 2 in every 1,000 births, typically emerging within the first two weeks postpartum. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and severe mood instability.

Pregnancy often brings shifts in relationship dynamics as you and your partner navigate new roles, responsibilities, and communication patterns. Hormonal and emotional changes can affect both partners, and physical intimacy may also feel different as your body changes throughout each trimester. Faith, culture, and differing expectations around parenting or family involvement can add further complexity, sometimes requiring compromise and open conversation. These changes are a normal part of the journey, and nurturing your connection through honest communication, patience, and quality time together can help you both feel supported as you prepare to welcome your baby.

Mental Health After Birth & During the Postpartum Phase

We provide comprehensive perinatal mental health support for new mothers, including specialized postpartum depression counselling in Edmonton, Sherwood Park and Calgary. Our services help you navigate pregnancy, childbirth, and the early stages of parenthood with confidence and peace of mind. From childbirth preparation to postpartum care and emotional support, we are here to guide you through every step of your journey, ensuring both you and your baby feel safe, supported, and empowered.

What Mental Health Challenges or Relational Issues May Come Up With Birth & Postpartum?

The postpartum period can be one of the most emotionally complex times in a parent’s life. Hormonal shifts, physical recovery, sleep deprivation, and a new sense of identity can bring up a wide range of feelings. For those who have experienced a premature birth, these challenges can be even more intense, often accompanied by fear, helplessness, and grief around the birth experience they had hoped for.

Mothers may experience postpartum blues in the first week or two after birth, which can develop into postpartum depression or anxiety if feelings persist or worsen. Fathers face their own pressures too, including anxiety, stress, depression, and concerns around bonding, finances, work-life balance, and supporting their partner through recovery.

These individual struggles can also ripple into the relationship itself. The arrival of a new baby often shifts relationship dynamics in ways that feel unexpected, and many couples find themselves struggling with communication, increased conflict, decreased intimacy, disagreements around parenting, or a general sense of disconnection. Recognizing these signs early and seeking support sooner rather than later can make a meaningful difference for both your relationship and your growing family.

If any of this resonates with you, you are not alone and support is available. Contact us or book an appointment in-person, online (video), or telephone.

  • Navigating feelings of guilt, helplessness, or a sense of failure that can accompany the early postpartum period

The path to parenthood, and everything that follows, can stir up emotions as deep as the love itself. Our specialized therapists are here to support you through every stage, offering a safe space to explore your hopes, fears, and challenges openly. Parenthood is not always easy, but you do not have to navigate it alone. Ready to take the next step? Reach out to our team here.

What Mental Health Challenges or Relational Issues May Come Up For New Parents?

Becoming a parent is one of life’s most significant transitions, and it can bring as many challenges as it does joys. Sleep deprivation, shifting roles, financial pressures, and changes in intimacy can all affect your mental health and your relationship.

For adoptive parents, the journey carries its own emotional complexity, including building attachment, navigating questions about identity, and adjusting to new family dynamics. For those raising a child with an illness or disability, feelings of fear, grief, guilt, and isolation can add further weight. Returning to work brings its own mix of emotions too, from guilt and anxiety to relief, as parents find a new rhythm between family and professional life.

These experiences are more common than many parents realize, and seeking support early can make a meaningful difference for your whole family.

What Should I Expect in Individual Counselling Related to New Parenting?

The transition into parenthood can bring up emotions that feel difficult to navigate alone. Whether you are adjusting to life with a newborn, working through the unique challenges of adoption, managing the demands of returning to work, or caring for a child with an illness or disability, individual counselling at Insight Psychological offers a dedicated space to process what you are carrying at your own pace.

In individual sessions, you can expect support with:

  • Managing anxiety, depression, stress, and mood changes that arise during the transition into parenthood
  • Gaining insight into your emotions, behaviours, and communication patterns to develop a deeper understanding of your child’s needs
  • Navigating the emotional complexities of adoption, including attachment, identity questions, and adjusting to new family dynamics
  • Processing feelings of guilt, grief, fear, or isolation that can come with raising a child with an illness or disability
  • Working through the mixed emotions of returning to work, including guilt, anxiety, financial stress, and identity shifts
  • Building practical strategies to enhance positive interactions with your child, foster trust, and strengthen your confidence as a parent

Both mothers and fathers are welcome in individual counselling. Taking care of your own mental health is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your growing family.

What Should I Expect in Couples Counselling Related to New Parenting?

At Insight, our therapists offer compassionate support for couples navigating the relational shifts that come with parenthood. Whether you are struggling to communicate under the weight of new responsibilities, feeling disconnected from your partner, working through the unique pressures of adoption, or supporting a child with additional needs together, couples counselling creates space for both of you to feel heard and understood.

In couples counselling, you can expect support with:

  • Rebuilding communication and reducing conflict as you adjust to new roles and responsibilities
  • Navigating changes in intimacy and reconnecting as partners beyond the demands of parenthood
  • Sharing the emotional load so that stress, anxiety, and exhaustion do not fall on one partner alone
  • Supporting each other through the attachment journey, whether through birth, adoption, or caring for a child with an illness or disability
  • Managing the pressures of returning to work, including childcare decisions, financial stress, and shifting routines
  • Strengthening your relationship so that your family has a connected and resilient foundation to grow from

Sessions are guided by experienced therapists who provide a warm, non-judgmental space where both partners can show up honestly and work toward the same goal together.

When is it time to get help?

Knowing when to reach out is not always straightforward. Perinatal mental health challenges can develop gradually, and it is easy to attribute what you are feeling to the natural stress of pregnancy or new parenthood. But when your symptoms are persistent, worsening, or interfering with your daily life, relationships, or ability to care for yourself and your baby, that is a signal worth taking seriously.

Consider seeking support if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Anxiety, sadness, or overwhelm that does not ease after one to two weeks
  • Intrusive or distressing thoughts about yourself, your baby, or your ability to parent
  • Difficulty bonding with or feeling disconnected from your baby
  • Withdrawing from your partner, family, or friends
  • Feeling like your family would be better off without you
  • A birth experience that left you feeling traumatized or out of control
  • Struggling to function in daily life despite wanting to do better
  • Concerns about your child’s emotional development or behaviour

You do not need to be in crisis to ask for help. Early support consistently leads to better outcomes for both parents and children. If something feels off, trust that instinct. If you would like to explore these instincts you can book an appointment in-person, online (video), or telephone.

Working with one of our therapists, you will work together to determine the best treatment method, personalized to you. Working with one of our specialized perinatal therapists, you can expect to:
