A good therapist supporting folks with autism will take the time to understand how you or your child thinks, communicates, and experiences the world, to build support around identified needs. At Insight Psychological, our therapists in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and Calgary work with children, teens, and adults with autism using approaches that respect neurodiversity while providing practical support. We also support parents and families navigating the process alongside their loved one.
Whether you or your child is newly diagnosed, awaiting assessment, or has been managing for years and needs additional support, we can help.
How Autism Can Show Up
Autism presents differently in every person. If several of the following are present, a formal assessment or therapeutic support may help.
Symptoms of Autism Include:
- Slow, or lack of, language development
- Unusual communication styles such as talking in movie quotes or repeating phrases out of context
- Repetitive motions or behaviours (rocking, fidgeting, “stimming”)
- Differences in social communication and interaction
- Sensitivity to loud noises, smells, textures, flavours, light, temperature, etc.
- Deep interests or self-soothing behaviours that help with regulation
- Anxiety
- Extreme aversion to change
When to Seek Support
Support can be valuable at any stage, whether you are waiting for a diagnosis, have just received one, or have been living with autism for years.
You may be looking for support if:
- Your child has been diagnosed with autism, and you want therapeutic support for them or your family
- You suspect your child may have autism spectrum disorder, and want guidance while navigating the assessment process
- Your autistic child is struggling with anxiety, emotional regulation, school transitions, or social situations
- You are an autistic adult looking for a therapist who genuinely understands your experience
- Your family needs help adjusting to a new diagnosis and what it means for daily life
A diagnosis can bring relief, grief, confusion, or all three at once. Whatever you’re feeling, there is support available for the whole family at Insight.
How We Support Autistic Individuals and Their Families
There is no single approach to autism counselling that works for everyone. Our therapists work with you to identify personal needs and goals, and build a plan around that.
Emotional Regulation Support
Many individuals with autism experience intense emotions that are sometimes difficult to manage. Therapy can help develop personalized regulation strategies that work with how your or your child’s nervous system actually functions.
Anxiety Counselling
Anxiety is one of the most common co-occurring challenges with autism. Our therapists can help identify anxiety triggers and develop practical coping tools, without forcing neurotypical strategies that do not fit.
Social Communication Skills
For children, teens, or adults who wish to work on their social skills, we offer support in a way that respects neurodiverse communication styles.
Family & Parent Support
Parenting a child with autism is rewarding and demanding. Our therapists can help you understand your child’s behaviour, develop consistent strategies for home, and manage the emotional weight of advocacy and caregiving.
Transition Support
Major transitions including starting school, moving to high school, or entering adulthood can be particularly challenging for folks with autism. We provide targeted support for navigating these periods.
Adult Autism Counselling
Many adults with autism come to therapy for the first time after a late diagnosis. We offer affirming support for identity, relationships, workplace challenges, and the specific experience of navigating a neurotypical world as a neurodiverse person.
What to Expect from Autism Counselling at Insight
Working with one of our therapists, you can expect support that is tailored to your specific situation rather than a generic program. This will look slightly different for children and adults:
- For children, this typically means working on emotional regulation, anxiety, social communication, and school-related challenges, while also supporting parents with practical strategies for home.
- For adults, this means affirming therapy that respects your identity, addresses co-occurring mental health concerns, and helps you navigate relationships, work, and daily life on your own terms.
We offer in-person sessions across Edmonton (South, North, Central, West), Sherwood Park, and Calgary, as well as online therapy across Alberta. Same-week appointments are often available. Contact us to learn more.
