NIHB Counselling in Edmonton and Sherwood Park

At Insight Psychological, we know that healing looks different for everyone. For many Indigenous clients, Western psychology alone isn’t enough. We offer a space where your cultural identity, traditions, and healing preferences are honoured.

We serve First Nations, Métis, and Inuit clients in-person in Edmonton, Calgary, and Sherwood Park. Secure online counselling is also available Alberta-wide.

Insight Psychological has long supported Indigenous individuals, families, and communities across Alberta through partnerships with organizations including Alexander First Nation, Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, and First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, while continuing to strengthen our culturally responsive approach to care. What is NIHB?

Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) is a federal program through Indigenous Services Canada that helps eligible First Nations and Inuit individuals access healthcare services that may not be fully covered through other insurance plans. Depending on eligibility and approval, NIHB may help cover counselling, psychological services, and related supports.

What Services May Be Covered?

Coverage may be available for: Individual counselling, Psychological assessments, Virtual/online therapy, Select travel-related supports for accessing care, Other mental health services approved through NIHB

Coverage and approval requirements may vary depending on the service requested.

What to Bring to Your First Session

If you are accessing NIHB, please have the following available if possible:

  • Status card or registration number
  • Referral documentation (if required)
  • Any approval or case information already received
  • Guardian information for youth clients when applicable

If you are missing information, our team can still help guide you in accessing care.

Eligible NIHB Counselling Providers at Insight Psychological

Insight Psychological currently has select therapists approved as NIHB counselling providers, with additional clinicians in the process of approval. If you are seeking NIHB-covered services, our intake team can help match you with an eligible provider.

If we don’t currently have an NIHB therapist available: We’ll provide information about other Indigenous mental health services in your area, or discuss alternative payment options, including our reduced-rate program.
