When did you know you wanted to become a psychologist?

From a young age I knew I wanted to help people. As I grew that shifted some between helping humans and helping animals. I realized as I grew older I was often the person friends would come to, or even strangers. It felt to me that I was able to help in ways by just listening and being a part of their experience. When I started university I was taking kinesiology, thinking I would like to work with the human body. One of my electives was a bio-psych course and I was immediately hooked. I wanted to understand human behaviour. Why we do what we do, or don’t. I wanted to learn more about humans and our brains and to figure out ways to help that involved the individual I was helping. I changed my undergrad and have not looked back.

What do you do to keep your outlook optimistic?

I always try to look for the good amongst the challenge. I think far too often we get stuck in the hard and the heavy. Not to say the hard and they heavy isn’t there, but rather, amongst it, we can find some good, somewhere.
