Insight Psychological Therapists - Kayla Patrick

Kayla Patrick, Therapist, BA, MACP (She/Her)

Hi there! I’m Kayla, a counselling therapist who fosters a safe and empathetic environment for you to share your story and feel supported in exploring your thoughts, worries, and overcoming challenges. Life can throw us many curveballs, from past to current events, and sometimes we need additional support to process these challenges and move forward. My approach to therapy is person-centred, where I believe the therapeutic relationship based on empathy, collaboration, acceptance, and genuineness is vital to growth and healing. Additionally, I use evidence-based therapies tailored to your unique needs. My goal as a therapist is to help you feel heard, valued, and empowered to make positive changes. Together, we can work to identify your strengths, increase self-understanding, and live a life more aligned with your values.

*NOTE: Our Post-Practicum Intern (Student) Therapists offer reduced rates for counselling support. Please be aware that FEES WILL BE NON-REIMBURSABLE by Extended Health Care Benefit Plans.

More About Kayla Patrick

My curiosity about human nature and overcoming my own challenges led me to pursue Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. I have always known that I wanted to work closely with individuals and provide a safe space for them to feel heard and accepted. My experience includes working as a Crisis Responder with a crisis helpline and with women who have experienced trauma and intimate partner violence. Before developing an interest in psychology, I was heavily involved in music and performing. From these experiences, I am aware of the unique challenges involved with high-level arts performance and have a keen interest in working with individuals in this area. When I am not working, you can find me out in nature, reading, and playing guitar.

My primary approach to therapy is person-centred, which places a strong emphasis on the therapeutic alliance and providing a safe space in which you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and concerns to promote greater self-awareness and personal growth. Additionally, I regularly use evidence-based therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based therapies. I seek to understand each individual and their story from a holistic view, where we explore social, psychological, biological, and cultural components. Occasionally, I use humour in sessions when appropriate, as it can contribute to healing and strengthening the therapeutic relationship.

Staring therapy can feel scary at first, but it can be the first courageous step towards healing and positive change. Whether you are going through a life transition or experiencing challenges related to anxiety, depression, stress, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), self-esteem, relationship challenges, trauma, or want to learn more about yourself, I would be honoured to work with you and meet you where you are in your journey.

A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS

What is your favourite quote?

“May the flowers remind us why the rain was so necessary” – Xan Oku

This quote is meaningful to me because I believe that challenges in life are inevitable and can act as catalysts for personal growth. Once we have gotten through the storm, we can appreciate the positive experiences more and recognize how far we have come.

When did you know you wanted to become a psychologist?

I knew I wanted to become a psychologist in my early twenties after reflecting upon experiences in my adolescence and early adulthood. I was curious to know why I was feeling a certain way and what steps I could take to improve my mental health and maximize my life. I began reading books on psychology, human behaviour, and different philosophies, and I started to understand how powerful the mind truly is. After attending therapy and witnessing the positive impacts it had on my life, I knew I wanted to help others overcome challenges and not just survive in life, but thrive!
