Insight Psychological Therapists - Kayla Patrick

Kayla Patrick, Practicum Intern Therapist, BA, MACP (She/Her)

Everyone experiences challenges in life from time to time, and these hardships may lead to difficult thoughts, feelings, and emotions that cause us to feel stuck or as if we are not attaining our full potential. Reaching out for help can feel daunting; however, allowing oneself to be vulnerable is often the first step to positive change and healing. As an empathetic and compassionate intern therapist, I am here to walk alongside you as you navigate challenges and celebrate your successes while providing a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space.

My approach to therapy is collaborative, holistic, and client-centered, where I help individuals identify their strengths and become more aligned with their goals and values. In addition, I use an eclectic approach, drawing from a variety of therapeutic modalities to tailor treatments to your unique needs and meet you where you are on your path to wellness.

*NOTE: Our Practicum Intern (Student) Therapists offer reduced rates for counselling support. Please be aware that FEES WILL BE NON-REIMBURSABLE by Extended Health Care Benefit Plans.

More About Kayla Patrick

My therapeutic approach is founded on a holistic perspective where I consider multiple areas in an individual’s life, including social, biological, psychological, and cultural factors that may be contributing to current challenges. I utilize techniques from various therapeutic modalities, including person-centered therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, solution-focused therapy, trauma-informed therapy, and mindfulness therapy, which are tailored to the client’s unique goals and values. Cultivating a strong therapeutic relationship is important to me, where I will actively listen to your story and understand your lived experiences from a non-judgmental and empathetic stance. I can take a more directive approach and provide new perspectives and insight if needed. In collaboration, we can work together to identify your personal goals, strengths, and abilities, and the practical steps required to create meaningful and lasting change.

Regarding my educational background, I am in the process of completing a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology degree and have previously obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with distinction. My recent experience lies in helping individuals of all ages as a Crisis Responder on a crisis helpline and working with women in a group setting who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Before developing an interest in psychology, I was heavily involved in music and performing. From these experiences, I am aware of the unique challenges involved with arts performance and have a keen interest in working with individuals in this area.

Helping others overcome obstacles and feel empowered to live authentic and meaningful lives is what I am most passionate about. I am committed to lifelong learning and embracing my curiosity about human nature and my enthusiasm for mental health and wellness. Whether you are experiencing concerns related to anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationship challenges, or want to improve your general mental health or an aspect of your life, I would be honoured to work with you.

A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS

What is your favourite quote?

“May the flowers remind us why the rain was so necessary” – Xan Oku

This quote is meaningful to me because I believe that challenges in life are inevitable and can act as catalysts for personal growth. Once we have gotten through the storm, we can appreciate the positive experiences more and recognize how far we have come.

When did you know you wanted to become a psychologist?

I knew I wanted to become a psychologist in my early twenties after reflecting upon experiences in my adolescence and early adulthood. I was curious to know why I was feeling a certain way and what steps I could take to improve my mental health and maximize my life. I began reading books on psychology, human behaviour, and different philosophies, and I started to understand how powerful the mind truly is. After attending therapy and witnessing the positive impacts it had on my life, I knew I wanted to help others overcome challenges and not just survive in life, but thrive!
