Insight Psychological Therapists - Suluter Nana Baah

Suluter Nana Baah, Practicum Intern Therapist, RSW, (She/Her)

Self care transcends not only taking care of your physical state, but also includes managing your spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being. Considering one’s day-to-day responsibilities or whether life throws you a curveball, it’s of great importance that we learn and implement healthy, effective, and culturally unique self-care practices in our lives. One of the various ways we can practise this is through therapy. I would feel privileged to work alongside you in creating awareness of previous traumas and supporting you in developing your innate strengths and resilience to bring about restoration and transformation soundness in our lives.

*NOTE: Our Practicum Intern (Student) Therapists offer reduced rates for counselling support. Please be aware that FEES WILL BE NON-REIMBURSABLE by Extended Health Care Benefit Plans.

More About Suluter Nana Baah

Suluter is currently in her last year in Master of Counselling of Psychology program at Yorkville University. Over the past eight years, she has gained meaningful experience as a psychologist trainee student and professionally as a social worker within a front-line and leadership role. As a first-generation Canadian, she has witnessed the aftermath of the existent gaps in mental health care faced within ethnocultural communities. Recognizing this, it has been her desire to work with marginalized demographics in continuing to create awareness about mental health and deliver culturally competent therapy to reduce mental health concerns. She has had the privilege to work with multi-interdisciplinary teams alongside Alberta Health Services, Children Services and various non-profit agencies in Alberta and Ontario.

Her professional fields of practice include Child Welfare, Mental Health, Addiction, Family Support/Family Violence, Trauma/Crisis, and Counselling. Her therapeutic approach is drawn from anti-oppressive, bio-psychosocial, and strength-based frameworks. Other modalities and techniques include cognitive behavioural therapy, multicultural therapy, crisis intervention therapy, trauma-informed care, client-centred therapy, mindfulness, and motivational interviewing techniques.

When did you know you wanted to become a psychologist?

Growing up in a large metropolitan city, Suluter gained a wealth of knowledge and understanding of various dynamics that existed across a span of ethnocultural communities. Despite the varying difference, a common observation amongst them was the stigma associated with mental illness. It was at this juncture, that the desire to pursue a career in mental health had been birthed.

Suluter aspires to decrease the shame and help her clients foster an understanding that mental health is in fact an integral part of one’s well-being. It is then that people will become equipped to identify and understand signs of mental illness. She strives to help empower clients to access and develop the necessary skills to identify and understand mental health, strengthen protective factors for positive mental health, and ultimately decrease risk factors/unhealthy coping mechanisms.
