More about Mark Szwender

I earned a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) Degree from Yorkville University, New Brunswick in July of 2015. During the final leg of this program, I completed a full time practicum with a private practice counseling service that referred primarily EAP (Employee Assistance Program) clients. Using an integrated approach, but with a focus on cognitive-behavioral therapy, I worked with adult clients from many different backgrounds, helping them return to work and improve their overall quality of life. Many clients struggled with issues related to anxiety and depression, but I also worked with clients dealing with anger issues, impulsivity, grief, interpersonal/social deficit issues, and personality disorders. I am especially competent and enjoy working with clients struggling with substance use disorders. I created and conducted a psychoeducational workshop with EAP clients on the subject of Emotional Intelligence and Improving Workplace Relationships as a final project for my Master of Arts Degree.

I have over 7 years of experience in conducting formal psychological assessments with clients from all different ages and backgrounds. In a clinical setting and under the supervision of neuropsychologist Dr. Norman Brodie, PhD.,R.Psych., I learned how to conduct tests for memory, attention, concentration, intelligence and personality in order to screen for learning disabilities, ADHD, nonverbal learning disabilities and other psychiatric conditions. I am also able to conduct formal neuropsychological assessments under the supervision of Dr. Brodie, for individuals who may be struggling with some form of brain related trauma. I completed a full year practicum with the Autism Society of Edmonton in which I was given the opportunity to work, hands on, with children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In November of 2016, I completed a workshop and became certified in using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd Edition (ADOS-2) that was lead by Dr. Adam McCrimmon, PhD., R. Psych. The ADOS-2 is a standardized instrument designed to help determine if an individual falls somewhere on the Autism Spectrum. Furthermore, I plan to take Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) training for individuals struggling with different kinds of trauma.

As a Registered Provisional Psychologist, I will be providing counseling and assessment services under the supervision of Dr. Cory Hrushka, PhD., R.Psych.
