Hello! My name is Elizabeth, and I am a practicum psychotherapist working through the final phase of my Masters in Counselling Psychology degree. I hold a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree and have worked as a junior and senior high school teacher in Alberta for over twenty years. I feel my many personal and professional experiences will assist in my work with adolescents, parents and those experiencing periods of transition in their life.
*NOTE: our Practicum Intern (Student) Therapists offer reduced rates for counselling support. Please be aware that FEES WILL BE NON-REIMBURSABLE by Extended Health Care Benefit Plans.

More About Elizabeth Groat
The nature of human existence is that no matter how hard one endeavour to avoid difficulties, everyone will experience challenging times, thoughts, feelings, emotions and pain. Through this reality, I feel that people can embrace their inner wisdom and cultivate the life they hope to live despite the broad range of human emotions we must all navigate. By identifying one’s inner strengths to engage in life meaningfully, people can experience a more intentional and richer existence, fulfilling their innate desire to live their best life even when they face hardships.
As my counselling journey has evolved, I have primarily been behaviourally and cognitively oriented within my counselling approach. From this belief and as my knowledge and experience have expanded, I have found that many individuals thrive and embrace life utilizing the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT, a third-wave therapy derived from CBT. To support this process, I have recently completed additional course work in ACT principles, protocols and the many areas clients can find a reduction in their symptoms. Through this process-focused therapy, clients are challenged to actively receive the full range of human thoughts, feelings and emotions that life inevitably includes.
In addition to the ACT therapeutic modality, I look to provide an multidisciplinary approach tailored to meet each client’s needs. Such perspectives include client-centred, solution-focused and somatic experience approaches. Moreover, I value that we are all experts in managing our own lives, and our work together is a partnership rooted in equality and collaboration.
Finally, I am committed to supporting diversity and inclusion for all. I have been fortunate to participate in social justice and mental health advocacy work, as I have long held a strong belief that everyone should have access to mental health resources that assist in healing and living the life one desires.
