Insight Psychological Therapists - Deb Johansson

Deb Johansson, Registered Psychologist, MSc., MFT

Deb Johansson is a Registered Psychologist, Marital and Family Therapist, and is a seasoned veteran of the human services industry, with 34 years of experience in a number of practice areas. Her work has included adolescent residential treatment, child protection work, individual, couples, and family therapy, behavioural assessment and consultation, psychoeducational assessment, program development, and management…and she’s still standing! Deb has special interest in working in the areas of trauma including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, grief and loss, work-related stress including vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout, and social justice issues.

Deb is the mother of 3 young adults (who used to be very cute and somewhat well-adapted children) who are the reason for everything in her life.  In her down time, Deb is an active campaigner for animal rights, an avid motorcyclist and boater, a rustic-style camper, and a general outdoors-woman.

Unfortunately, Deb Johansson is not seeing any new clients at Insight Psychological. Please select another therapist from our team.

More About Deb Johansson

Hello and welcome to Insight Psychological! I’m really glad I can be here to help you during this difficult time, and I will always do my very best for you.

I am a Registered Psychologist in both Alberta and Northwest Territories, and a Masters trained Marital and Family Therapist.  I have over 30 years of experience in the helping professions, all of it working with children, youth, and their families.  I work from a Bowenian Family Systems perspective, and bring in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Eye Movement Desensitizing and Reprocessing, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, and other pertinent interventions as required given the nature of the difficulties. My clients often present with an array of complex issues, and while these can become longer-term therapeutic relationships, I also work well with short-term, solution-focused strategies to quickly move toward healing and resolution.

Have you, or anyone close to you, had to overcome any trauma, or mental health challenge?

I have my own experience with trauma and loss following the death of my husband in 1997. Following that, my son became life-threateningly ill, causing myself and my other children significant stress as we worked through his illness. As a result of my experiences, I have come to understand what many of my clients are going through, and I understand how difficult situations such as these can be for people. I am here to help my clients navigate the waves on their oceans as gently as possible.

What do you think the world needs more of?

I think the world, while having tons of these folks around already, needs more kind, compassionate, and caring people in leadership positions.  We need our leaders to think about the people they lead and the clients they serve more than the money they are making. I feel like our world would be a better place if we have highly emotionally intelligent leaders at the helm.
