More about Alice Styles

I am a registered social worker and a student at Insight Psychological.  I am in the practicum stage of finishing my MA in Counselling Psychology, however I have been working as a mental health therapist for close to 4 years with Alberta Health Services.  I have worked in the area of social work and mental health for the last 8 years both in Edmonton and rural Alberta.  I believe everyone gets “stuck” in life from time to time, or things just don’t go the way we planned.  When this happens, it’s okay to reach out for help and understanding.  By utilizing varied approaches such as CBT, DBT, Solution Focused, Person Centered and Strength’s based counselling, I look forward to getting to know you, hearing your story, and providing safe and effective therapy.

A couple of questions:

Alice, when did you know you wanted to be a psychologist?

My mum told me that I was 5 or 6 when I said I wanted a job where I help people, so in a way I’ve known for some time. More specifically however, I finished my degree in social work in 2017 and started working as a mental health therapist for Alberta Health Services, through this position I realized I wanted to be a psychologist as well as a registered social worker and have been pursing that goal since.

What do you do to keep your outlook optimistic?

I find optimism through nature’s example. The sun always raises and sets, winter comes and melts into spring, and each season finds its way into being no matter what the obstacle and in its own time.  I think we can learn a lot from that; for me its hope, patience, compassion and resiliency.
