Ask A Therapist Onlineshooting survivor lost
Genevieve asked 12 years ago

My girlfriend has lost three people that meant everything to her. Yesterday was the three year anniversery of her ex-fiance`. He was shot and killed in front of her, saving her life in the prosess. We lite the candles and said a prayer for him. She has seen a Therapist in the past but never touched on the subject. She needs to start to put some closer on this, perhaps a group setting of other survivors with simular stories. She feels she needs a therapist that has experianced this, I think she is making more excuses to lose herself and not deal with it.

It sounds like your girlfriend has experienced a lot of trauma. You’re right about the importance of finding closure. I would suggest finding a therapist who practices EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). We do have someone trained in this here at Insight. In regards to support groups, I would suggeset calling The Support Network (780-482-0198). They deal with a variety of crises and offer several different kinds of groups.
