Child behaviour

Our 8 year old daughter has a very hard time at school. She moves around the classroom quite a bit. We have purchased a wedge pillow for her chair and even filled out a SNAP IV assessment which came back as below the cut off for ADHD. She is constantly being yelled at by the teacher (who has basically written her off as a problem). We are desperate for some ideas re: behaviour mod as she is a smart and energetic child and the teacher just tells us she is “too busy with 24 kids” to embrace any specific strategies.

Judy,

Thanks for turning to Insight Psychological. It sounds like you are doing your absolute best to support your daughter so that she can be successful in school. What you are struggling with is definitely a systemic issue. It may be a combination of the interactions between the teacher and your daughter, your daughter’s personal struggles, and peer relations as well. I encourage you and your family to meet with a therapist to explore other strategies for your daughter to help her focus better in the classroom and to address any other issues that may be impacting her behaviour at school.

All the best,
