Anxiety Counselling & Therapy
Typically, anxiety disorders are characterized by both emotional and physical sensations such as palpitations of the heart, feelings of tension, apprehension, or even fear.
Generally there are five kinds of anxiety disorders:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Phobic Disorder or Phobia
- Panic Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
All of these disorders may have a biological cause or predisposition, but many of them can also be conditioned, learned or induced by a belief or event. Stress can also be a factor that increases the likelihood of anxiety disorders.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by high levels of chronic anxiety that are generally not related to any specific form of threat. Symptoms such as trembling muscle tension, diarrhea faintness, dizziness, sweating, heart palpitations are common and this disorder tends to start with a gradual onset.
Phobic Disorder (or Phobia) can be identified as a persistent and/or irrational fear of something or a situation that presents no realistic danger to the individual. Many people have mild phobias such as fears of large animals, spiders or even being in public. However, to be classified as a Phobia, it has to be seriously interfere with general everyday behaviour
Panic Disorder (Panic Attack)
Panic Disorder is identified usually by some form of recurrent attack that happened suddenly and unexpectedly and feels like a paralyzing anxiety attack. This sometimes can be misidentified as having a heart attack with the individuals feeling like the world is coming to an end, that they are dying or that they cannot breathe, etc.
CBT again is another therapeutic technique that tends to hive a promising therapeutic response.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, (OCD) is a disorder that is comprised of 2 parts:
- obsessiveness can be identified as distressing thoughts that tend to repeatedly intrude in someone’s mind
- compulsions are the actions that someone feels an uncontrollable need to do in order to reduce their anxiety level
OCD tends to be present when an individual has uncontrollable intrusions of thoughts and/or urges to engage in some form of ritual that also usually senseless.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Symptoms of PTSD can include
- re-experiencing a traumatic event in the form of nightmares or flashbacks,
- emotional numbing,
- problems in social relationships due to the feelings of being vulnerable or elevated arousal.
- Anxiety, anger, or guilt associated with the experience.
Commonly, treatment such as E.M.D.R., Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and more newly developed therapies have been found to significantly reduce the impact of the traumatic image.
