The Connection Between Genital Echo Theory and Women's Breasts

The Connection Between Genital Echo Theory and Women's Breasts

The worlds fascination with womens breasts has been around since man saw the first woman. Indeed, womens breasts hold a certain hypnotic charm that is easily demonstrated in teen road trip movies and commercials. What is it that makes this pair of fatty mammary tissue so enthralling that even the most disciplined men fall down to its power? There are several theories that try to explain why breasts are so captivating, among them that breasts are fertility indicators and the Genital Echo theory.

Genital Echo Theory

According to this theory, the curvy and sometimes pendulous nature of the breast evolved when humans started to walk upright in order to evolve the same kind of excitation primitive males felt when looking at the curvy bottoms of human females. This excitement influenced mating and was crucial in the process of finding mates and procreating.

Indeed breasts and bottoms do look alike and through time, both have been considered the symbols of female sexuality and fertility. Perhaps the most famous representation is the Venus of Willendorf, which was created about 25,000 years ago. This figure of a woman with large hips and large breasts is still a sight to behold even in modern days, and is perhaps one of the reasons why more than 300,000 breast augmentation procedures were done in the US in 2007.

Other theories about the breast

Other theories state that breasts are signaling devices meant to show that the deposits of fat are sufficient to withstand the rigors of pregnancy and breastfeeding. Men who see a pair of plump round breasts immediately get the idea that the women is fertile and capable of raising children, making her a potentially ideal mate. According to experts this is the reason why the breasts start to sag as the women ages and fertility declines. In a way, breasts are a good indicator for fertility and is a way for men to know which woman to chase after and which woman to avoid. All these are biologically valid and acceptable since humans are designed to want to pair up with a healthy fertile woman because she is more likely to give birth to a healthy offspring.

Breasts and milk

The curvaceous and pendulous nature of breasts, according to experts have no relation to its function as source of milk. Some even point out that breasts offer a certain disadvantage to primitive women because they are heavy, may cause back problems, and become a hindrance when running.

Breasts in lower animals

Fertility signals on the chest are not exclusive to humans. Gelada baboons also have swellings in the chest area that swell and recede according to the females sexual receptivity. The red swellings of the female chimp also signal fertility and these come and go in sync with the animals level of fertility and sexual receptivity. Humans on the other hand tend to have these swellings permanently although they do undergo slight changes in size when the woman is more fertile. The permanence of the swelling indicates that humans are basically more or less fertile during the entire year.
