Could i be bipolar?

Ask A Therapist OnlineCould i be bipolar?
Amber asked 12 years ago

Why do i go from being calm and happy, to being extremely angry to the point where i hit things and just get an urge to break things? It usually happens when someone says something that provokes me or just makes me angry. Usually after i go into this “ragging” mood, I get really sad and start crying.

Wow, this must be very frustrating for you. It sounds like you are having difficulties controlling your emotional responses to angry situations. You must remember that it is okay (and even healthy) to feel anger. However, it sounds like the way you respond to this feeling of anger is not so healthy. I would suggest speaking to a therapist who can help you understand how you make sense of angry situations, which will then explain how you respond to them. There may even be some hormonal imbalances taking place. You can speak to someone here at insight by calling 780-461-1717.

In the meantime, I would suggest googling “controlling anger” in order to get some tools and strategies to start controlling your anger today. (some of these suggestions will include deep breathing, counting to ten, creating words to express your anger rather than actions, and practicing mindfulness exercises).
