5-year-old not listening

Ask A Therapist Online5-year-old not listening
Francine asked 12 years ago

My question is I’m not sure how to handle my son with his behaviour as he has started not to listen and constantly wants to get in trouble to get attention or wants to be the centre of attention. Recently he got in trouble at afterschool care because he was following another child. It’s come to the point where I don’t know what else to do. Is it possible for you to help me?

Francine,

Thank you for turning to Insight Psychological for help. Parenting is one of the most challenging roles we have as human beings so I can appreciate your level of concern. We can absolutely help you in this regard. Insight Psychological has a number of wonderful therapists who would be more than glad to meet with you, with or without your son, to support you in your role as a parent and to get to the bottom of his behaviours. Children as young as 5 often have difficulty identifying and expressing their feelings verbally as they are simply not as cognitively developed as we are. As a result, it is not uncommon for children to express feelings through their behaviours.  Perhaps due to a recent change, transition, loss, or issue, your son’s behaviours may be a way of communicating what is going on within him.

To book an appointment with a therapist to discuss matters further, please give our office a call at 780-461-1717.

Best regards,

Ashley
