Patricia Lavelle- Calgary Office (Assessments only) - M.Ed., Registered Psychologist
With 32 years of experience in both the public and private sectors of counselling children, adolescents and adults, I am happy to meet with with you and assist in facilitating improvement in your daily life functioning.
As a Master’s level Psychologist, I maintain up to date workshop attendance and training in the counseling techniques, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), hypnotic relaxation therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
You might find it helpful to know that as a psychologist, I do not live in a bubble, free of problems. My life has had its share of difficulties which I have been able to overcome and from which I have been able to move forward. I have also had many rewarding and fun experiences over many years.
In my life I strive to take a balanced and overall lifestyle approach to living and this extends into how I view and approach counseling. It is well documented in research that “everything is connected”. By this I mean that you are impacted by how you are physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Problems in one of these areas has a negative impact on all the other areas. I use a model that includes you at the centre, surrounded by physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects.
In the individual counselling sessions I will encourage you to look both at the problem areas you have identified and your overall balance in the four areas. We can discuss easy ways to implement wellness promoting practices in each area. First, I will encourage you to identify what you are already doing in these areas. Then, if you wish to try some new things, I will further encourage you to start with one or two things to try in eathe areas, while gradually building a program of overall beneficial self- wellness in your life.
In couples counseling, I give each person the opportunity to give their viewpoints as a model to be used in daily interaction. Using the John Gottman research based approach to couple’s work, I further promote mutual respect through learning how to increase the friendship and positives between the pair, as well as to develop non defensive, non corrosive conflict management and resolution strategies.
I do believe counseling can be of assistance in many areas of life and am looking forward to working with you to make your life better. As the quote below says, difficult things can actually help to improve how we deal with our lives.
Hard things are put in our way, not to stop us, but to call out our courage and strength.
