How to Pull Teenagers Out of Depression

How to Pull Teenagers Out of Depression

Depression is common among teenagers. The condition is often categorized according to its levels of severity and a lot of people experience mild to moderate depression sometime in their teenage years. Mild to moderate depression can result to a few visible changes in the demeanor and even in the appearance of the teenager. A typical teenager who is suffering from depression may feel tired all the time, may have difficulty falling asleep, does not want to eat, does not want to go out and socialize and may want to cry for no reason at all. An overall feeling of sadness is often present in teenagers with depression and they may be baffled why they cannot seem to shake the feeling off. Other symptoms of depression include loss of memory, inability to concentrate, poor diet, poor grooming, and negativity. Thought and comments about suicide are not uncommon in persons with deep or clinical depression.

Dealing with teenagers with depression

The best way to deal with teenagers with this condition is with concern, love and understanding. Some teenagers do not understand what they are going through themselves. Telling them about the condition will help identify the condition and makes the process of treating it easier. Some people react to depression differently if they are not familiar with the condition. It is important to educate people and to tell them that criticism, yelling and telling the depressed person to stop being lazy is not a good way to deal with depressed individuals. For mild depression, monitoring is still a must because these forms of depression can escalate to severe depression.

Helping the teen have a normal semblance of a life when he or she is depressed is important as well. For one, teens with depression can be taught several exercises that can help them cope better with depression. Breathing exercises, developing a new hobby, regular exercises are all effective ways to avoid wallowing in the negative elements of depression. Exercise is a good way to fight off mild to moderate depression in teens because it triggers the release of endorphins or the body's 'happy' hormones.

Treating depression

In some cases, depression leads to physical symptoms like headaches. Going to the doctor for painkillers may reduce the intensity of symptoms like these. There are modes of treating the symptoms of depression while there are other methods aimed at treating the condition itself. A Trained Psychologist is tasked with forming a treatment plan that may include a variety of methods to help pull the person out of depression. Psychotherapy is also another mode of treatment for depression. Here the patient learns to uncover certain events in his or her life that may have triggered the condition. In some cases, group therapy may be helpful in curing depression because it allows the person to feel what he or she feels.
