Anxiety and Fear

Ask A Therapist OnlineAnxiety and Fear

I have a constant fear that something bad will happen. I always expect the worst and the tiniest thing can trigger it. I am now afraid of natural disasters and being alone. I just can’t cope with what is going on around me.

I’m sorry to hear this. To help, I offer these suggestions:

First, do some deep breathing exercises and/or meditation to train your body to relax. The intention of these exercises is to gain control over your anxiety by slowing down your thought process. This article offers insight into this process. Or, Google “guided meditation” or “relaxation scripts” to get other suggestions.

Be mindful of your self-talk. If needed, change your self talk to things like “I am safe,” “I am able to cope,” and “I can survive this.”

Finally, the workbook “The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook” by Edmund Bourne is a helpful resource.

I hope these suggestions help you. Of course, talking to a professional can be helpful too. Psychologists and therapists are trained to listen in order to pinpoint the root of the anxiety.
