Depression Counselling with Insight

Depression is a psychological condition that requires medical and therapeutic treatment. It is also referred to as clinical depression, major depression, or major depressive disorder. The condition affects both a person’s mind and physical abilities, causing feelings of despair.

When someone is depressed, he or she cannot just “move on” or “try to feel better.” This condition may require treatment through the help of psychological professionals.

Symptoms of Depression

Like any other sickness, depression has symptoms. These may include:

  • insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • indecisiveness and an inability to concentrate
  • feeling guilty or worthless
  • frequent thoughts of committing suicide or of death
  • a lack of interest in everyday activities
  • irritability
  • difficulty making decisions

There also may be physical symptoms, such as headaches and back pain.

If you have experienced any of these symptoms, it is advisable to set up an appointment with a psychologist as soon as possible. It is difficult to handle these problems on your own; professional help may be necessary for you to get better and deal with your condition.

Leaving depression untreated can lead to several mental health problem, and in extreme situations, can cause one to consider suicide.

CBT and Depression

Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most recommended form of counselling for depression. It is based on the belief that your thoughts are what shape your behavior and feelings. In this form of therapy, the negative beliefs and behaviors are replaced with positive practices. Thus, having positive feelings allows you to see an unwanted situation in a good way.

The Mental / Physical Health Connection

It is also important that individuals diagnosed with depression do little things to decrease the symptoms. Physical exercises such as swimming, jogging, any kind of sport, and getting enough sleep have been found to decrease depressive symptoms. Avoiding drugs and alcohol is also important, as they may exacerbate the symptoms.
