Insight's Child Psychologists
In the past, children were perceived as smaller versions of adults. This way of thinking did not contribute to their development, but thankfully psychologist Jean Piaget pioneered child psychology and confirmed that indeed - children think differently from adults. It is important that parents adapt this way of thinking and consider that their children have different needs based on their age. They can also see the world from another perspective and face many challenges for the first time. Some children face more problems than others, usually due to issues at home or at school, and sometimes due to biological or inherited conditions. Others face psychological disorders that parents may not notice or do not want to acknowledge.
In the case of school problems, psychologists are present to address these issues. Psychologists in a school setting discuss and deal with problems or disorders that are caused by, or create stress in the schooling environment. This may include:
- bullying
- learning disorders
- peer relationships
- family issues
- Sexual Issues
For parents who notice that their child comes home sad or is ‘shyer’ than usual, it is recommended to sit him or her down and ask what is happening in school. Some children do not like to tell their parents that they are being bullied, so parents should make the effort to find out. The same goes with parents of bullies. Look out for details in their stories or ask how they interact with the other kids at their school. Once parents notice something is off, they should approach a psychologist for consultation.
How Insight's Child Psychologists can help.
Parents also tend to approach child psychologists if they are concerned about their child’s developmental or cognitive functioning. Evaluating your child is nothing to be ashamed of; in fact, knowing if your child has a condition or not, allows parents to plan their child’s education. Children with special needs may require special education, which will depend on the degree of their condition(s).
Child psychologists also treat children after traumatic events. If the child has just lost a parent or family member, or has been abused, it is advisable to have him or her see a psychologist. Professional help will allow the child to process the traumatic event, and transition into the new changes in their life.
