Harming Myself

I can't stop punching myself in the face or anywhere else on my body until I get a bruise. I feel I have a disorder much less an addiction at doing this. My depression has been gone for a few years now and a horrible breakup has made it come again but I haven't harmed my body like this before. Anything sets me off. I want to know if I have a disorder or if it's just major depression?

Giselle,

Thank you for turning to Insight Psychological for help.  It is difficult to say why you punch yourself until you bruise, but based on the compulsive aspect of your behaviour, it sounds like you may be struggling with a subtype of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. I absolutely encourage you to book an appointment with a therapist to address your concern so you can explore this behaviour more fully.

We look forward to hearing from you,

Ashley Tulloch
