Ask A Counsellor - Answered
Confused
Hello, my name is Stephanie, I'm 24 and I just lost my dad to complications of the liver as a result of drinking. I also have several other things going on in my life that I am severely stressed over and I believe I have become depressed. I feel I need someone to talk to and would like to have counselling, but I'm nervous and a bit apprehensive about taking that step. I am not afraid of hurting myself or my 20 month old son, I never would, but I feel lost and overwhelmed and out of control. I am uneasy all the time and seem to have anxiety problems sometimes when I get too overwhelmed. I'd like help finding the best option to overcome this. I am a single working mother and I feel I need help finding the right direction again.

Stephanie,
I am so sorry to hear about your loss, and I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I can imagine life has felt even more overwhelming for you since the loss of your father. Losing a parent at a young age is one of the most difficult experiences that one can go through. Your father's death may have further complicated other life challenges, including those involved in being a single mother. I admire you for reaching out for help.
It sounds like you are experiencing a myriad of feelings right now, so I encourage you to surround yourself with loving and supportive friends and family so that you don't feel alone in your struggles. I also encourage you to book an appointment with one of our therapists. Therapy would provide you with the opportunity express and process your thoughts and feelings, and develop coping strategies to deal effectively with depression, anxiety, stress, grief, and future life challenges.
We hope to hear from you soon.
Ashley
