Edmonton Addictions Counselling

  • Assessment

How do I know if there is a problem?
When you come to Insight Psychological we begin by determining if there is a problem and how much of a problem there is.This is all done during the initial session.
At the first session, the therapist will assess the level of addiction and or the problem behaviour.
Insight offers both formal (testing) and informal measures to determine the level of problem.
This session usually involves a series of questions about the person's alcohol, drug use, or gambling with the intent on gaining insight into the problem and determining a treatment plan.

  • Treatment

At Insight Psychological, our therapists are dedicated and able to work both alongside and independently of AADAC and 12-Step programs such as:

    • Alcoholics Anonymous
    • Gamblers Anonymous
    • Narcotics Anonymous

We are able to assist clients in gaining a better understanding of the roots of their substance use, abuse or addictions to help them make the long lasting positive changes they desire.
Clients are also able to receive information sessions, one-to-one Counselling and family Counselling in these areas.

  • Support

Insight Psychological Inc. therapists work with clients to help develop and work through other issues such as improving and increasing their coping skills, expressing anger in a healthy way, resolving unfinished emotional issues and working through past trauma. We can assist and help clients identify strengths and skills they already posses to incorporate into their support network.

All clients are encouraged to attend self-help groups specific to their addiction while attending Counselling. This increases the support system and maintains the lasting changes in their behaviour. Insight Psychological encourages clients to maintain their membership in these self-help programs after they have completed their Counselling services.

  • Sex Addition

Michael Herkov, Ph.D as outlined in psychcentral.com, outlined the definition of Sexual addiction as a progressive intimacy disorder characterized by compulsive sexual thoughts and acts. Like all addictions, its negative impact on the addict and on family members increases as the disorder progresses. Over time, the addict usually has to intensify the addictive behavior to achieve the same results.

For some sex addicts, behavior does not progress beyond compulsive masturbation or the extensive use of pornography or phone or computer sex services. For others, addiction can involve illegal activities such as exhibitionism, voyeurism, obscene phone calls, child molestation or rape.

Sex addicts do not necessarily become sex offenders. Moreover, not all sex offenders are sex addicts. Roughly 55 percent of convicted sex offenders can be considered sex addicts. About 71 percent of child molesters are sex addicts. For many, their problems are so severe that imprisonment is the only way to ensure society's safety against them.
